Warmer rooms without replacing every window

Older homes often have plenty of character, but single-glazed aluminium windows let heat escape and leave rooms feeling cold. Condensation can form on the inside of the glass, adding moisture where it is not wanted.

Full window replacement can be a large expense and may change the look of the home.

Retrofit double glazing keeps the existing aluminium frames in place and replaces the single glass with double-glazed units. It is a practical option for older homes where better heat retention, reduced condensation and less outside noise are the main goals.

Opening windows usually need to be fully replaced, which is checked during the measure.

Clarity Glass measures the existing joinery, explains the glass options and confirms what is involved before the quote is accepted. To request a free measure and quote, use the

How the retrofit glazing process works

If your older home feels cold, the whole window frames do not always need to come out. Retrofit glazing replaces the glass in existing single-glazed aluminium windows with double-glazed units, improving performance without changing the look of your home too much.

The existing glass is removed from the aluminium frame. A double-glazed unit is fitted back into the same frame, then the bead that holds the glass is replaced and matched to the existing colour where possible.

Nine times out of ten, opening windows need to be fully replaced.

Energy efficient windows for warmer, more comfortable homes

Retrofit glazing is mainly about helping rooms hold warmth. Double-glazed units slow heat loss through the window and can reduce the condensation that forms on older single-glazed glass.

A sealed gap between panes also helps to dampen sound, so road and street noise carry less into bedrooms or rooms facing traffic.

Glass is chosen room by room. Options may include tinted glass, obscure or privacy glass for bathrooms, and thermally improved glass when scoped. Low-E or argon options can be discussed, with the final specification confirmed during quoting.

This work is often considered during wider updates, such as
kitchen splashbacks.

Costs, timeframes and frame checks

Full window replacement can cost around $30,000 to $40,000. Retrofit double glazing is often around $10,000 to $15,000, depending on the home and the number of windows. That is why it can suit older villas, bungalows and homes where the existing aluminium frames are staying.

A typical retrofit takes around four to five weeks from measure to completion. The main variable is material availability, including whether the right beads are in stock to suit your aluminium. Frame condition is checked first, and timeframes are confirmed at the quote stage.

Many homeowners also plan
custom mirrors or frameless glass showers during the same refresh.

In many cases, yes. Retrofit glazing is designed for existing single-glazed aluminium frames. The frame condition is checked first, then the glass and beading requirements are confirmed before quoting.

Double glazing slows heat loss through the windows by using two panes with a sealed gap between them. Rooms can hold warmth better, which helps reduce the load on heating.

Options may include tinted glass, obscure or privacy glass for bathrooms and thermally improved glass options. Low-E or argon options can be discussed, with the final specification confirmed during planning.

Double glazing can reduce outside noise because the sealed gap between panes helps dampen sound vibrations. For noisier areas, glass options can be discussed during the measure and quote.

A typical retrofit takes around four to five weeks from measure to completion. Timing depends on material availability and whether the right beads are in stock to match your aluminium.
